There are many common pediatric vision problems which your child may experience. Unfortunately, the vision screening children receive at school will only screen for some refractive errors. This is why you will want your child to see our Pelham Bay pediatric optometrist for an eye exam. Amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye” is a common pediatric eye problem that affects about 4 million people in the United States. It occurs when one eye is used less than the other eye, and the brain begins to ignore all vision signals from the weaker eye. It used to be believed that this condition cannot be corrected unless it was detected and treated before age 6. However, today many eye doctors no longer believe this is the case, and feel that even adults can improve their eyesight using vision therapy. Treatment for amblyopia will depend on the extent of the condition, the patient’s age, and other factors. Sometimes a child’s eye may be patched for several hours a day in order to encourage the brain to once again pay attention to visual signals sent by the weaker eye. Strabismus is another common childhood vision problem. When a child has strabismus, both eyes do not necessarily focus in the same direction at the same time. This condition can be corrected with vision therapy, or sometimes with prescription eyeglasses. Congenital cataracts are a serious vision problem which can also be detected during a pediatric eye exam. Should these be discovered, the child will be referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist for care. Nearsightedness is also a common refractive error that children experience that can be easily corrected with eyeglasses or other treatment.
